'Indian Week' - Food - Part II
This is a picture of Indian Ice Cream: Kulfi! It tastes like condensed milk...so sweet...so good! The one in the picture has little pieces of pistachio.
Ladus are popular sweets. This (blurry) picture shows two of the four sesame-seed ladus that MasalaDad's grandmother had given me. MasalaDad's mother brings homemade ladus when she comes to visit, but I didn't take a picture in time...they're all gone!
There are so many different types of indian snacks! I like the ones with 'chaat' (salad that uses a blend of spices). I've learned several names: 'Bel puri', 'Pani puri', 'Dahi puri' and my favorite one is 'Sev batata puri', which is pictured below. Every afternoon at around 5:00pm a man comes around the neighborhood selling some of these snacks. He carries a stand and a big 'drum' (with all the necessary ingredients) on his head. When someone wants to buy a snack, he places the 'drum' on the stand and arranges the snack. Notice that the vendor uses pages of magazines as plates. In the picture you can see six 'crackers' arranged in the shape of a flower. Each 'cracker' has a potato mixture topped with finely chopped onions, tomatoes and coriander. It's also topped with a sauce that has a somewhat sweet taste to it and something that looks like bread shavings. It's yummy!
The last picture of this category shows the lyrics to the song 'THANK U' by Alanis Morissette because that song mentions 'transparent dangling carrots' and that's exactly what they sell in the market here. I also found what I call 'real carrots' (which are more popular in the south of India). So I bought carrots of both types and put them together to see if you can spot the difference. Hey Mari,
I love chaats and after seeing the photos have started missing India even more :-(,also the lovely pista kulfi:-),
for us indians the transparent dangling carrots are the normal ones and esp when one loves Carrothalwa, coz u just cant make a good carrot halwa with orange ones as they r not that sweet, we miss them here,
I am really enjoying the India Week and waiting for ur next post,
cheers
Nidhi: How interesting! I think the orange carrots are sweeter than the transparent ones! I also find them easier to peel :)
In the post, I forgot to mention that some of the vegetables that I like to eat like brocoli and yellow and red peppers are considered 'exotic' vegetables. But the coliflower and the green pepper are very common.
