Blogging Backlog

Having my Mother at home was already great news! Eventhough this translated into more work at home (those homecooked meals are such a task!) we were already enjoying our new routine.

Then yesterday my Mom had to go to her first medical check-up after being released from the hospital and when she came back home she was free from the VAC machine! She was instructed to lead a "normal life" and feel "free to walk" while she continues to heal. This is why Fabi, my Dad, my Mom and I went to have lunch at a nearby shopping mall! Even I felt free! So free, in fact I am able to sit down and write on my blog again.

The problem is I have *SO* much to write about...I don't even know where to start!

  • First of all, let me send HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES to Golu's Aunt Priya who celebrated her day on Oct. 6th! Priya: We were working on a video to send you and the camera I was using ran out of batteries (at 11:00pm!) Hopefully, we will soon make up for that!

  • Our good friend Saher and my uncle Gerardo also celebrated their birthdays last Oct. 5th.

  • Today is Fabi's paternal grandmother's birthday and she was happy to hear him say "Aji" (Grandmother) over the phone several times.

Other recent events include the following:

On Oct. 3rd, Germany celebrated the 17th anniversary of its reunification.

In the southern German state of Bavaria, history will remember this as the day that
Stoiber is out and Beckstein is in.

However, the real historic event of the week actually took place last SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7th as the Costa Ricans had a chance to vote on a
referendum on the Central American Free-Trade Agreement with the United States (CAFTA).

I've been opposed to this agreement since I started to learn about all its implications.

Unfortunately, only 48% of other Costa Rican voters agree with me and around 52% of the Costa Ricans who voted supported the deal. It's a sad time for our country...we sold it. Since this is a democracy, we respect the majority's choice. What I do celebrate is the fact that there was a referendum and that it was carried out in a way that reflects our peaceful way of living. I'm so proud of the fact that I was able to participate in the voting...even my Mom voted!

My time is up....can't blog any more 'cause it's hectic around here!

Finally...good news!

My Mom is back home from the hospital after 26 days!

This was her second stay at the hospital in less than two months. She has overcome an amazing number of obstacles and still has a lot of healing to do. Her wound is still attached to the VAC machine, which is actually a small device she carries in a bag around her shoulder. It's not a light device and it makes a whooshing sound every once in a while. We're hoping she will only have that machine for a couple more weeks, but most of all we're hoping and praying her wound finally heals.

In the meantime, my Mom is enjoying the fact she is at home, eating what she wants, sleeping in her own bed and most of all, she can't believe she got the chance to enjoy Fabi's company again. We thank God for the wondeful progress in my Mom's health.

I thank all of you who have been peridiodically checking this page for news and the ones who have sent me positive messages of hope. It has really been great to feel your support. It's amazing how difficul times like these change the way you see things and remind you to appreciate life's blessings even more.

Hurdles galore

A whole week without Internet at home and I still had to wait two more days to have a chance to update my blog. There's so much to do around here, it's unbelievable! I'm really glad I came home to help out.

Eventhough reports show that the nasty
bacteria is no longer in my Mom's system, only my Dad and one of my brothers have continued to go see her at the hospital. We're waiting for a few more days to see what the progress is before I show up to see her again.

My Mom's wound is still healing (she's still attached to the VAC machine), her creatinine level is still a little higher than the normal 1.0 mg/dL (but it was REALLY high before, so there's improvement there) and her hemoglobin count is 7 g/dl (instead of the normal 12.0 g/dl), which translates into anemia. She needed a blood transfusion.

The hospital routine can be exhausting. We're all tired of this, but we're very thankful to God for slowly healing my Mom and to all our family and friends who are still praying that she comes back home soon.

Not yet out of the woods

Four days ago there was a big storm around here and since then I don´t have Internet connection at home, hence the lack of posts.

I visited my Mom in the hospital for six days (everyday since I reached Costa Rica) until some tests showed that the infection she has in her wound is hosting a very strong bacteria, none other than the ugly
pseudomona aeruginosa. As a result, my Mom is now isolated and whoever visits her has to wear protective gloves and gown. This bacteria is spread by contact, not by air, so no mask is necessary. In order to lower the risk of contamination we have decided that only my Dad and one of my brothers will visit her at lunch and dinner time. She can have tea in the afternoon by herself and we have supplied her with some Reader´s Digest magazines.

Yesterday was the first day I didn´t go to the hospital and I felt helpless. So, I´m doing what I do (at times of stress) and I´m deep cleaning my family´s house from top to bottom.

In the meantime, my Mom is undergoing a
VAC procedure, which basically means she´s hooked up to a vaccum which will hopefully cleanse her and heal her. We will have more test results in one or two more days and we´re all praying for good results.

Thanks to all who have contacted me with good wishes for my Mom. I hope I will have Internet at home very soon and be able to update again and reply to my mails.

Hospital routine

Visiting hours are from 11:00 am to 8:00pm.

Each patient in the hospital receives ONE visiting card. The family uses that card to submit it at the hospital entrance as a way to control that each patient gets only one visitor at a time. We take turns using the card and each day my Mom has had a visitor all day during the allowed visiting times.

Each patient gets breakfast, lunch, coffee/tea and dinner. If the patients need help having their food, a visitor can assist them.

Last week our friend Titi (who is actually an angel from heaven) helped my Mom every day at lunch time. Then my Dad and 2 brothers took turns visiting my Mom for the rest of the day.

This week, my Mom can now have food on her own, but we'll still be with her at all times during visiting hours. Since things are looking better, everyone goes back to work and my Dad and I will take turns going to the hospital during most of the day. My brothers will go see her when they come back from work.

Apparently, children are allowed inside the hospital during visiting hours. This seems just incredible to all of us in our family! When Ishan asked me if my Mom had seen Fabian, I realized nobody had even thought about the possibility to take him to the hospital. However, we're going to wait for a few more days. We think that when my Mom can leave her bed and walk a little, she can go to a small open area with a garden where there are a few benches. In that case, we could take Fabi to go see her for a few minutes. Of course that we all want Mom home as soon as possible; I would especially like her to be home before I return to Germany.

Better and better... / Mejor y mejor...

This second time around my Mom has been in the hospital for a week now. I have been visiting her every day for the past 3 days, since I reached Costa Rica.

Besides the obvious improvements (hands less swollen, lips less dry, she's attached to less machines, has practically recovered her kidney function), her recovery is also evident in her sense of humor.

There are still a couple of major concerns (e.g. does her surgical wound infection require yet another intervention) , but overall we are very optimistic.

I am very thankful for all the support that our family has received. It's overwhelming.

So far my Mom's recovery is going "s l o w l y but surely"!

My initial plan is that I will be here for about one month. I sure hope that my Mom will be home by then and that things will be a lot closer to normal than they are now.

I have also visited my maternal grandmother (who lives next door and who was being cared for my Mom). She's also doing good, her routine and care has not been interrupted despite my Mom's sickness, except that now other family members have joined in to help.

In the meantime I am juggling with jetlag, visits to the hospital and caring for Fabian.

Fabi, by the way has had a language explosion in his development and is now practically talking Spanish non stop. My Dad says that according to Chomsky's theory, Fabi is reinforcing a language structure that he has already internalized. "Good!", I say!

Me alegro!

A year ago / Hace un año...

A year ago Fabi and I were fully absorbed by our country's national festivities. I would have never imagined we would be back here again so soon.

¡Gracias!

A month ago / Hace un mes

It's been a month since my Mom had an operation due to appendicitis. The doctor had warned her that it was going to be an uphill recovery because her condition was not detected immediately.

She came back home for a few days only to go to back to the hospital due to a kidney failure.

Last Monday (Sept. 10th) she had a major crisis in the hospital, which obviously worried us a lot - to say the least. Our family was getting ready to expect the worst.

On Tuesday (Sept. 11th) Ishan finally convinced me to come home immediately to be with my family. After hesitating, I finally started to pack my bag. The thought of packing something to wear for my mother's funeral crossed my mind.

Fabian and I left Erlangen on Wednesday (Sept. 12) and reached Costa Rica on Thursday (Sept. 13) at 7:00a.m. (local time). I went to see my Mom at the hospital that same afternoon and was amazed at how well she has recovered from the crisis she had earlier this week. She still has a long road ahead in her recovery and there's always a shadow of doubt regarding the consequences that will linger after all this ordeal. All of us in the family are holding on to our faith to remove that "shadow of doubt" and above all to accept God's will.

Thanks for the prayers you offer for my Mom's health!
